Encore Apprenticeship Journey
Depending on product line, the below timeline can take anywhere from one to four years. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but here are some things you can expect to learn throughout your time in the program.
Learn the Fundamentals
Learn More
Sprinkler:
- Grooving and threading CPVC products
- Cutting rod
- Reading plan documents (for installation)
- Learning to use other construction equipment like lifts
Suppression:
- Work with completed systems
- Fire Science Basics (fire triangle)
- Valve assembly: recharging
- Hazardous materials familiarity
- Portable Fire Extinguisher License
Fire Alarm:
- Understand how to read drawings
- Bending conduit/pulling wire
- Learning electrical code for pipe/wiring and supports to ensure system is installed per NEC
Develop Planning & Communication Skills
Learn More
Sprinkler:
- Work closely with the Operations to develop a Game Plan for projects
- Communicate with the customer and other trades
- Own the managing of material on the project
Suppression:
- Getting familiar with NFPA codes and system applications
- Interfacing with customers on site
Fire Alarm:
- NFPA codes and understanding how to layout a system from a design standpoint
- Performing pretest/final inspections with FD
- Ability to be left alone to complete work by reading FA drawings
Learn System Functionality

Sprinkler:
- Learning the functionality of all systems in your designated trade
- Dealing with shut downs, draining and filling that will allow you to feel the pressure of a real project – learn that preparation is key
Suppression:
- Installation fundamentals
- Troubleshooting system issues
- Adapting to local codes & AHJ requirements
- Diagnosing cause & repairing system discharges
Fire Alarm:
- Be able to install systems with little/no guidance based off design given
- Troubleshoot grounds/faults/opens on fire alarm system
- Understand how to integrate fire alarm system with other systems in a building
Licensed and Ready to Go!

Once you’ve completed your schooling and work hours, you’re ready to sit for your test to become a Licensed Journeyman.
After earning your license, you’ll start the next chapter of your Encore Story. The time and effort spent in the apprenticeship program will give you invaluable lessons and knowledge that you can transfer to another role at Encore, including (but definitely not limited to!):
- Staying in the field as a journeyman to run larger projects on your own and getting the opportunity to teach new apprentices the trade
- Move to a service or testing position in the field, furthering your skills and gaining exposure to all facets of the Life Safety trade
- Moving into the office for a project management or sales role
